A 29-year-old is facing serious criminal charges after speeding away from provincial police at a high rate during a traffic stop on Highway 417 in early July.

Officers were conducting traffic enforcement near Maitland Avenue around 1:30 a.m. when they clocked the vehicle doing 162 km/h — a speed that automatically triggers a stunt driving charge. When officers attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver sped away from the area.

The driver was later located and now faces a battery of charges: dangerous operation of a motor vehicle under the Criminal Code, flight from a peace officer, performing a stunt (drive motor vehicle), speeding more than 50 km/h over the posted limit, failure to stop for a red light, and obstructing the licence plate.

The accused's driving licence has been suspended and the vehicle impounded for 14 days. He is scheduled to appear in Ottawa court at a later date. The specific court date has not been announced.
