A 56-year-old has been charged with stunt driving after reaching speeds of 172 km/h in a posted 60 km/h zone on Riverside Drive in Ottawa, an incident caught on an unmarked police cruiser's dashcam.
On Saturday, July 18, around 7 p.m., an officer with Ottawa's road safety unit was patrolling the south end in an unmarked cruiser and came to a stop behind a vehicle at a traffic light at Riverside Drive and Hunt Club Road. When the light turned green, the vehicle accelerated northbound on Riverside Drive and allegedly reached 172 km/h. The driver also sped past a marked police cruiser travelling southbound on the same stretch.
The officer in the unmarked cruiser safely stopped the vehicle. The driver was charged with stunt driving, speeding, and failing to surrender his license. He received an immediate 30-day license suspension and his vehicle was impounded for 14 days. At court, he could face a fine between $2,000 and $10,000, a further license suspension between one and three years, and up to six months in jail.
