Ottawa City Council voted Wednesday, June 13 to join the federal Clean Fuel Regulations Program, which allows municipalities to gain and sell credits for using verified clean energy that replaces fossil fuels in transportation.

The city will sell credits from its Zero-Emission Bus program, with revenues supporting further electric bus expansion. If registered in July, the credits could generate approximately $1.3 million in revenues in 2026. That figure could jump to $3.9 million by 2027 and reach $4.3 million annually once the fleet reaches 350 electric buses.

The program also creates opportunity for Ottawa to invest in additional emission-reduction initiatives, generating further revenues to fund related projects. The city says this approach is separate from its existing ability to report on corporate greenhouse gas reductions connected to these same credits.
