Ottawa man charged with possessing child sexual abuse materials

Police say a 22-year-old south-end resident was arrested Tuesday following a months-long investigation by the Internet Child Exploitation unit.

Update — July 23, 2026: Mattias Chicoine, 22, of Ottawa was charged with possession of child sexual abuse and exploitation material and accessing child sexual abuse and exploitation material as part of Project Time, a provincewide investigation by the Ontario Provincial Police and 25 municipal police services that resulted in charges against 63 people on Wednesday. Chicoine was released from custody and is scheduled to appear in court on August 18. The investigation identified and safeguarded 51 victims, resulted in 213 criminal charges, and seized 814 electronic devices, with 154 investigations remaining ongoing.

A 22-year-old Ottawa man has been charged with possession and accessing child sexual abuse materials, police said Wednesday.

The investigation began in May after a report of someone sharing child sexual abuse and exploitation materials online. On Tuesday, Ottawa police's Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) unit executed a search warrant at a residence in the city's south end and arrested Mattias Chicoine.

Chicoine appeared in court Wednesday. The investigation is ongoing.
