Ottawa police say traffic deaths have accelerated dramatically this year, with 26 fatalities and eight life-threatening injury collisions recorded so far — already more than the 23 deaths for all of 2025.

Between September 9 and early October, the Fatal Collision Investigation Unit responded to ten serious crashes, six of which were fatal. Police noted a "concerning" increase in collisions involving older pedestrians and motorcyclists. Of this year's deaths, seven were pedestrians, four were motorcyclists, one was a cyclist, one was an ATV operator, and one was a moped or seated scooter operator.

Common contributing factors police identified include speeding, impaired driving, distracted driving, careless driving, dangerous driving, and failure to follow rules of the road. "Behind every collision statistic is a person, a family, and a community forever affected by loss," Ottawa Police said in a statement Friday. "Most serious collisions are preventable." The service urged drivers to slow down and share the road, emphasizing that "road safety is a shared responsibility."
