Twenty-nine people have died on Ottawa roads in 2026, already surpassing last year's total of 23 deaths. Police say the toll is not inevitable, but three fatal collisions in a single week underscore how quickly the decisions drivers make can turn fatal.
On October 15, a 60-year-old man was struck by a vehicle at Strandherd and Cresthaven drives in Barrhaven around 6:20 a.m. and pronounced dead at the scene. On October 11, a 69-year-old man died in hospital after an SUV collision on March Valley Road between Terry Fox Drive and Klondike Road. On October 10, a 21-year-old man on a motorcycle died after crashing with an SUV on Trim Road, about 100 metres south of Watters Road.
"Twenty-nine families have already experienced the heartbreak of losing a loved one on our roads this year," Sgt. Josh Callaghan of the Road Safety Unit said. "These tragedies are not inevitable. Many can be prevented when all road users make safe, responsible choices every time they travel through our community. We are asking everyone to slow down, stay focused and look out for one another before another life is lost."
Police are focusing enforcement on speed, impaired driving, distraction, and pedestrian and cyclist safety. The Ottawa Police Service emphasized that road safety is a shared responsibility, and that a single moment of distraction, impatience or poor decision-making can have devastating consequences.
