Ottawa police dispersed two sizeable illegal vehicle gatherings last week and laid a series of traffic charges as part of an escalating enforcement campaign against unauthorized car meets.

On June 5, officers responded to the 1500 block of Merivale Road around 8:30 p.m., where approximately 40 motorcycles and 15 vehicles had assembled. The crowd dispersed with minimal resistance.

The same evening, another gathering of about 40 vehicles was monitored at Trainyards Drive in the east end. During the operation, an 18-year-old driver was clocked travelling 126 km/h in a 70 km/h zone near Strandherd and Beatrice drives in Barrhaven and charged with stunt driving—an offense that includes automatic licence suspension and vehicle impoundment for two weeks.

Police also charged a 30-year-old with driving without insurance, without a valid permit, and failing to display front licence plates.

Across both incidents, officers issued nine speeding charges, three for failure to display front plates, and two for failing to stop at red lights. This is the third enforcement operation of its kind this month. Earlier operations resulted in nearly 40 charges and dispersed gatherings of 75 vehicles in Kanata and elsewhere across the city.
