Hateful emails were sent to several Muslim schools and centres in Ottawa between September 20 and October 6, prompting a joint investigation by the RCMP and Ottawa police.

The Muslim Association of Canada, a grassroots social movement focused on educating and motivating Muslims across the country, reported the threats to police. Ottawa police have increased their presence around the affected locations as investigators work to identify those responsible.

Ottawa police said in a statement: "We recognize how deeply concerning and unsettling these threats may be for members of Ottawa's Muslim community. Everyone has the right to learn, worship and gather without fear. Hate, threats and intimidation have no place in our community."

Officals are in contact with community leaders and local institutions to share information and provide support. Anyone with information about the emails is asked to call Ottawa police.

The investigation comes as hate crimes against Muslims have risen in Canada. Police data shows 204 hate crimes against Muslims were reported in 2025, compared with 142 in 2021. Experts and advocates have cited rising tensions amid the Israel-Hamas war and the spread of harmful rhetoric on social media as contributors to the increase.
