Recovery continues for Ottawa residents impacted by the July 1 extreme weather event, with the City offering multiple programs to help households manage storm-related expenses and rebuilding.
The Compassionate Grant Program provides a one-time $1,000 payment to eligible property owners and tenants affected by flooding caused by sewer backup. The City may also cancel, reduce, or refund property taxes for properties where buildings were destroyed or significantly damaged.
Residents whose furniture and household items were damaged by flooding can apply for help through the Furniture Assistance Initiative, a temporary program led by the City with Matthew House Ottawa and Habitat for Humanity Greater Ottawa. Eligible households are being contacted directly, but those who need furniture assistance but have not been contacted should call 3-1-1.
Recovery information sessions are continuing at multiple locations. Sessions include support for insurance claims, building code and permitting guidance, information on waste disposal, and access to counselling and wellness resources. City staff will assist residents with Compassionate Grant and Residential Protective Plumbing Program applications on July 24 and 25 at Ben Franklin Place, second floor, 101 Centrepointe Drive. Additional sessions run through July 30.
OC Transpo is accessible to both session locations. Para Transpo fees will be waived for individuals traveling to and from the information sessions.
