The Ottawa Senators beat the New York Rangers 7-4 Saturday at Canadian Tire Centre, surviving a third-period rally to stay hot in October. Drake Batherson scored three goals and an assist — his third NHL hat-trick — including an empty-netter to seal the win. Jake Sanderson added a goal and two assists, with his empty-net goal midway through the third period giving Ottawa a 5-3 lead before the Rangers pushed back. Tim Stützle and Dylan Cozens also scored.

The Senators led 3-0 early in the second and dominated much of the game. Jonas Johansson, making his debut with Ottawa after signing as a free agent, stopped 24 saves — his first start since April with Tampa Bay. The 31-year-old has played 105 NHL games but hadn't started in six months.

Ottawa's power play went 0-for-3, and the Rangers scored a short-handed goal to cut it to 3-1, then twice more to pull within one before Dorofeyev made it 5-4 with 4:28 left. Coach Travis Green said the Senators "got about 5 percent loose" after going up 3-0 but "thought we really defended hard in the third." Batherson described his empty-netter, which bounced off his shin from 60 feet out, as "like watching a long putt go down the green and just hoping it fell."

The win marks Ottawa's eighth victory in October — the fourth time in franchise history the team has reached eight wins in that month. As HOC reported in October, the Senators improved to 4-1 by rallying past Nashville in a shootout earlier this month. Top goalie Linus Ullmark remains out at least 10 days with injury.
