A strong low-pressure system is bearing down on Ottawa Thursday with heavy rain, intense winds, and a risk of tornadoes.

Environment Canada is forecasting rainfall amounts of 40 mm or greater as thunderstorms develop later Thursday morning. Wind gusts are expected to reach near 90 km/h, with the system carrying a risk of tornadoes classified as a Yellow Alert — hazardous weather that may cause moderate, localized disruptions or damage.

The agency warns of possible power outages and damage to roofs, fences, and tree branches. Thursday's high is forecast at 20 C, with the humidex making it feel like 25. Thursday night will remain cloudy with a 60 per cent chance of showers and early-evening thunderstorms, with a low of 15 C.

Friday's outlook includes a 60 per cent chance of afternoon showers with risk of more thunderstorms and winds gusting to 50 km/h. The high is forecast at 19 C and low 12 C. Weekend chances of showers are 30–40 per cent, with highs ranging from 19 to 24 C by Sunday.
