The Canadian government has updated its travel advisory for Argentina, warning Canadians of stricter entry requirements and enhanced security measures affecting the South American destination.
On Wednesday, the federal government added information regarding entry and exit requirements and border security protocols. According to the advisory, Argentina has raised its national security level "following renewed tensions in the Middle East".
"As a result of enhanced border security measures due to the situation in the Middle East, some travellers are facing delays or are being refused entry into the country," the notice states. The Government of Canada urges travellers to have all necessary documentation ready for stricter checks at border crossings and points of entry.
Enhanced security measures are now in place across Argentina for critical infrastructure, sensitive targets, and Jewish institutions. "This includes schools, clubs, places of worship, and the Argentine Israelite Mutual Association (AMIA)," according to the advisory. Canadians should expect increased security presence in public spaces as well.
The updated advisory is part of a broader pattern of travel warnings from Ottawa. The Government of Canada also recently updated its travel advice for the United Kingdom over potential safety risks, urging Canadians to "exercise a high degree of caution". On Tuesday, Canada warned of a terrorism threat in Europe, noting that "terrorists have carried out attacks in several European cities" and that attacks in the U.K. have included knife and vehicle attacks as well as explosions.
