Durham police plan $88M Ajax station to open by 2031

Durham Regional Police Service announced plans for a new standalone station and division in Ajax, pending regional council approval and funding later this year.

The Durham Regional Police Service is moving forward with plans to create a new station and division dedicated solely to Ajax, citing the municipality's projected population growth. The new facility would be located on Harwood Avenue North between Rossland Road East and Taunton Road West, pending Region of Durham council approval of funding later in 2026.

Currently, officers assigned to patrol Ajax operate out of the Durham Regional Police Service station in Pickering. Durham Regional Police Chief Peter Moreira said the need for a dedicated Ajax station is urgent, noting that 53 per cent of the time a police officer leaves the Pickering station, they are responding to calls in Ajax.

"Where Ajax is growing in terms of density presents problems that quite honestly we need to build our capacity to meet this challenge," Moreira told reporters. He added that Ajax has not had a standalone station for decades. Moreira cited additional constraints on the existing Pickering station, which is located in a floodplain and cannot be expanded, while freeing up space there would support operations in Pickering.

The new Ajax station is projected to cost $88 million and is scheduled to open in 2031, subject to approvals. The division will host a community response unit, criminal investigations unit, and community engagement personnel.
