Unifor targets Ford first in Detroit Three auto talks

Canada's largest private sector union will begin negotiations with Ford Motor Co. on June 22, kicking off pattern bargaining with the Detroit Three automakers.

Unifor, Canada's largest private sector union, has named Ford Motor Co. as its first target in upcoming negotiations with the Detroit Three automakers. Talks with Ford will begin on June 22, with the union representing approximately 5,000 workers across Ford facilities in Canada.

Unifor uses pattern bargaining for its auto sector negotiations, a strategy that typically involves securing a deal with one automaker before moving to others. The union selected Ford to negotiate with first because of a long-standing and productive working relationship with the company.

Negotiations with fellow Detroit Three members Stellantis and General Motors are expected to follow Ford's talks.

The timing of these negotiations comes as the auto industry contends with significant headwinds. All three companies and their workers have spent much of the past year navigating U.S. tariffs on auto parts, steel, and aluminium. Additionally, the Carney government recently reopened the Canadian market to Chinese electric vehicles, adding further complexity to the bargaining landscape.
