Alberta's crime severity index hits 12-year low as RCMP credit collective effort

Alberta's police-reported crime dropped significantly in 2025, with the Crime Severity Index falling 10.4% from the previous year—the lowest score since 2014, according to Statistics Canada.

The Crime Severity Index tracks the volume and seriousness of police-reported crime across 149 RCMP jurisdictions in Alberta by assigning weights to offences based on severity. Break-and-enters made up the largest portion of the CSI score at 15.4%, but that figure is down 19% compared to 2024. Assault and uttering threats have remained stagnant over the past five years.

"We're encouraged to see Crime Severity Index scores continuing to decline across Alberta," said Supt. Mike McCauley, Alberta RCMP's Officer in Charge of Crime Reduction Strategy. "This progress is a testament to the collective efforts of Alberta RCMP officers, our policing partners, community organizations, and the residents we serve."

RCMP say they use CSI data to create long-term strategies targeting criminal activity. The force has allocated part of $2 million in provincial funding received in May to establish a rural organized crime team—a mobile unit of officers who focus on gang activity and violence linked to drug and firearm offences. The team visits communities with high crime levels to target prime offenders.

McCauley noted that while the province is moving in the right direction, work remains ahead. "Public safety is a shared responsibility, and these results demonstrate what can be achieved when law enforcement, partner agencies, and all levels of government work together toward a common goal."
