Friday's Yours — Live Music, Clear Skies, and the Long Weekend Starts Now
Clear and cool, the TTC's got some detours, and T.O.'s live music scene is fully alive tonight.
It's Friday morning and you've got 9°C, mainly clear skies, and a UV index of 4—solid enough to catch some sun on your commute if you're out, but don't need sunscreen cranked to max. Sunset's at 6:45 PM, so if you're heading out tonight you've got a real evening window. The air's clean, which means you can actually breathe on your way around the city.
If you're heading downtown or across the east side this morning, the TTC's got a few detours worth knowing. The 301 and 301L Queen are rerouting westbound through Church, King East and Spadina due to a security incident. The 68 Warden's also got a detour south via Sheppard, Birchmount and Ellesmere. Nothing that'll completely sink your morning, but worth a heads-up if those are your usual routes. On the highways, the ramp from the 400 to westbound 401 is closed because of a tractor trailer fire—if you're coming from the north heading west, give yourself extra time.
On the local front: Pam Knox battled stage 3 cancer while living in a shelter, and the good news is she's in remission now and finally housed. That's the kind of story that reminds you why this city keeps pushing forward. Meanwhile, the city's pledging to build 10,000 rental homes next year—Mayor Chow's got big plans, and Sauga's also getting in on it with a 100 per cent affordable rental tower rising at Port Credit GO. Not everything happens overnight, but the momentum's there.
If you're thinking lunch or dinner, you've got some solid moves. There's a whole piece on Toronto's best burgers floating around—tavern-style, smashed, hand-ground, whatever your vibe is. If you're a croissant person, Tangssant Viennoiserie just won best in the city, so that's worth a scoop. And heads-up for Liberty Village folks: the Starbucks at 15 Solidarity Way is becoming a Tim Hortons—not everyone's thrilled, but it's happening. Oh, and if you want something weird and fun, Bar Bokeh just opened a speakeasy through a matchahaus in Leslieville. Cocktails and a secret door vibe—Friday energy, right there.
Tontonight's where it gets good. Live music's everywhere: Shubh Saran with NRTHRN, Ephaisus and Spectra at Sneaky Dee's at 6 PM, Asha Banks at The Garrison at 7, Buffalo Traffic Jam with Colin Lynch at the Danforth Music Hall at 7, and if you want something spookier, Legends of Horror's running at Casa Loma at 7 PM. Pick your vibe—indie, alt-rock, folk, electronic, whatever—and go. With sunset at 6:45, the evening's yours to claim.
Have a solid Friday. You've earned it.
