BC Nurses' Union pauses picket lines, enters mediation with employers

The BC Nurses' Union is pausing all picket line job action at the end of Tuesday as it enters mediated bargaining with the Health Employers Association of BC, signalling a shift toward resolving a dispute that has escalated rapidly over recent weeks.

The union announced Monday that mediation is now underway. BCNU president Adriane Gear said the union is entering the process "with cautious optimism." "Our bargaining committee is dedicated to engaging in a productive process and working toward an agreement that addresses the issues nurses have been raising for months: safe staffing, safer workplaces, manageable workloads and fair compensation."

While picket lines will end, a provincewide ban on non-nursing duties and restrictions on overtime remain in effect as talks continue. Veteran mediators Vince Ready and Amanda Rogers were appointed Friday to help settle the disagreement.

Picket lines had escalated dramatically in recent days, appearing at Vancouver General Hospital, Surrey Memorial Hospital, and multiple sites on Vancouver Island, affecting patient services. The escalation followed members rejecting a tentative agreement reached by negotiators in June.

Gear emphasized that nurses never wanted to strike. "Nurses never wanted to be on picket lines—they want to be at the bedside, caring for patients." The union thanked the public, labour allies, and community supporters who stood with nurses throughout the dispute.

Mediation is set to run for 10 days, with potential for recommendations to B.C.'s labour minister if needed to help reach a settlement.
