Bedbug infestations are rising sharply across North America, with summer marking the time of year when the pests are at their worst. Bedbugs are reddish-brown, apple-seed-sized bloodsuckers that hide in narrow crevices in furniture, clothes, linens, and mattresses during the day and emerge at night to feed on human blood.

Some researchers estimate bedbugs date back to the age of dinosaurs, but they have become a persistent urban pest. They can be year-round problems but have traditionally thrived in summer months. The bite itself is painless, but some people develop itchy red welts a day or so later—while others have no reaction. That lack of awareness can allow infestations to spiral quickly.

New research has raised questions about disease transmission. A 2023 experiment by University of South Dakota researchers demonstrated that bedbugs could acquire MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus), an antibiotic-resistant infection, during one feeding and spread it during a later one. Chow-Yang Lee, an entomologist at the University of California at Riverside, said there has not been clear evidence that bedbugs have spread diseases between people, as the bugs' digestion and anatomy seem to prevent germs from passing on efficiently. However, follow-up research is needed to determine whether bedbugs are actually spreading MRSA to people in real-world conditions.

Infestations can reach severe levels. A 2020 case report from France detailed a 70-year-old man who lived alone and fainted on the street, later diagnosed with anemia caused by prolonged blood loss. An investigation of his apartment found thousands of bedbugs in his bed and on the floor, walls, and curtains.

To avoid bringing bedbugs home, inspect luggage and clothing after travel, check hotel rooms before settling in, and wash clothing in hot water after visiting potentially infested spaces. If you suspect an infestation, contact a pest control professional immediately.
