Canada's men's soccer team is one victory away from ending a 42-year Olympic drought. The U-20 squad defeated Jamaica 3-1 in Wednesday's Concacaf Championship quarter-final, securing a place in next year's FIFA U-20 World Cup while positioning itself for Olympic qualification.

Comox, B.C.'s Liam MacKenzie, who developed through the Vancouver Whitecaps academy, scored twice for Canada. Fellow 19-year-old Max Vogele added an insurance goal in the 116th minute to seal the win.

The victory sets up a high-stakes semifinal Friday at Mexico's Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. The highest-finishing Concacaf nation outside the automatic-qualifying United States will earn a spot in the LA 2026 Olympics — a tournament restricted to players under 23 with three permitted exceptions. If the U.S. beats Costa Rica in the other semifinal, the Canada-Mexico winner books their ticket to Los Angeles.

Canada last qualified for men's Olympic soccer in 1984. The country has been a powerhouse on the women's side, winning gold at Tokyo 2020 and bronze medals in 2016 and 2012, but the men's program has been absent from the Games for over four decades. The U-20 World Cup berth marks Canada's first appearance in that tournament since hosting it in 2007.
