A one-time grocery rebate top-up hits bank accounts Friday, June 5, for Canadians who filed their 2024 tax returns and received the GST credit in January.
The payment is equal to 50 percent of the GST credit for the 2025–2026 benefit year and is meant to offset rising food costs while the government transitions to its new Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit in July.
A single senior with $25,000 in net income will receive $267. A couple with two children and $40,000 in net income will receive $533. The Canada Revenue Agency says the one-time top-up will provide $3.1 billion in immediate assistance to eligible households.
When the payment arrives, it may still show up as the GST credit in your account. Starting July 3, the new grocery rebate will begin quarterly payments at increased amounts — 25 percent higher each year for the next five years. The federal government estimates a family of four could receive up to $1,890 in 2026, and a single person up to $950. Food prices have risen faster than overall inflation since 2020, costing the average household $782.
