Egypt earned its first-ever win at a men's World Cup on Sunday night, defeating New Zealand 3-1 in front of a sellout crowd of 52,497 at BC Place in Vancouver.

Mohamed Salah was the match's standout performer, scoring the winning goal in the 67th minute — nine minutes after teammate Mostafa Zico had drawn the match at 1-1. In the 82nd minute, Salah's corner kick set up Trezeguet for Egypt's third goal.

The crowd was decidedly pro-Egyptian, with fans wearing red jerseys and waving Egypt flags. They erupted for each of Egypt's goals and whenever Salah touched the ball.

Ranked 29th heading into the tournament, this was Egypt's fourth FIFA World Cup appearance and first since 2018. The team went winless in their previous three World Cup tournaments (2018, 1990, and 1934).

The victory puts Egypt in first place in Group G with four points. Iran has two points, Belgium has two, and New Zealand has one. New Zealand and Belgium will play in Vancouver on June 26, while Egypt takes on Iran the same day in Seattle.
