Law enforcement has disrupted what officials are calling "planned attacks" meant to target a UFC event held at the White House over the weekend, with multiple arrests made across several states.
FBI Director Kash Patel announced on Tuesday that the agency, along with partner organizations and the Department of Justice, had disrupted the alleged threat through a multi-state operation. Five people were arrested from states including Ohio, Missouri, and California.
The FBI learned about the potential threat on June 10, four days before the mixed martial arts event took place on the White House's South Lawn on June 15. Details about the nature of the threat remain limited, with additional information expected once charges are unsealed.
Secret Service Director Sean Curran said in a statement that the agency "worked around the clock to identify those responsible and hold them accountable." President Donald Trump, who celebrated his 80th birthday at the UFC event, has sought to tie the fights to celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
