FIFA has reversed course on one of its most unpopular World Cup rules: fans are now allowed to bring one sealed disposable water bottle into stadiums across the U.S. and Canada.

The original ban sparked backlash from city officials and health advocates. Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow called it a "money grab," citing dehydration risks during matches played in hot weather.

"One soft plastic disposable factory-sealed water bottle up to 20 oz will be permitted," said FIFA chief operating officer Heimo Schirgi in a video posted Saturday.

The restriction on reusable bottles remains in effect. "What is not allowed are hard-sided reusable water containers which could pose safety and security risks," Schirgi added.

Vancouver and Toronto begin hosting matches June 12 and 13 respectively. The policy shift comes just over a week before the tournament kicks off in Canada.
