Five children were killed and six others injured in a two-vehicle collision in rural Ontario on Friday night, June 13.

The crash occurred around 7:30 p.m. in Mapleton Township, northwest of Guelph, when a van carrying 10 people collided with a sport utility vehicle at the intersection of 4th Line and Wellington Road 12.

The five victims — four girls and a boy, ranging in age from 4 to 12 — were all related to each other, according to Ontario Provincial Police. Police did not specify the relationships.

Four other adults and one infant who were in the van sustained serious injuries, as did the driver of the SUV. At least three people were airlifted to trauma centres; others were taken to local hospitals.

OPP Superintendent Dwight Thib thanked bystanders who stopped to help first responders, saying the victims received immediate care at the scene.
