Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is calling on the federal government to keep the fuel excise tax suspension in place until at least Canada Day 2027, arguing that Canadians cannot afford the price increase that would follow its scheduled end.

The Liberal government suspended the federal excise tax on gasoline and diesel in April in response to rising fuel prices tied to international conflict. The move reduces gas prices by 10 cents per litre and diesel by 4 cents per litre. The suspension was set to expire September 7, 2026 — after Labour Day.

"Prices are on the rise again and Canadians can't afford another 10-cent-per-litre hike next month," Poilievre said Sunday. He is pushing for the measure to remain in place for at least another 10 months beyond the current end date.

The federal government announced the tax suspension April 20, 2026, setting it to run until September 7, 2026. Prime Minister Mark Carney said at the time that the measure would stay in place until Labour Day.

The suspension has been a temporary fiscal response to volatile global energy markets and remains a point of political debate as the expiration approaches. No indication has yet emerged that the government will extend it.
