Health Canada has approved Svemia, a generic semaglutide injection for weight loss from Canadian company Apotex.
The drug is for once-weekly treatment of people 12 and over as a supplement to a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity for chronic weight management. It's a generic version of Denmark's Novo Nordisk brand-name drug Wegovy.
This is the third generic semaglutide product approved by Health Canada, following two earlier approvals for Type 2 diabetes treatment from Dr. Reddy's Laboratories and Apotex. Health Canada is reviewing six other submissions for generic semaglutide from different companies and expects to make more decisions in the coming weeks and months.
