A former federal politician in Manitoba is facing multiple firearms charges after police seized a massive weapons cache from his home.

Manitoba RCMP executed a search warrant at the Dauphin residence of Inky Mark, a former MP who represented the riding from 1997 to 2010 as a member of the Reform Party, Canadian Alliance, and Conservatives. Police seized 439 firearms, $300,000 in cash, and an antique cannon.

Mark, 78, is charged with firearms trafficking, possession of a firearm with a tampered serial number, possession of property obtained by crime, and unsafe storage of firearms. Authorities say at least three of the seized weapons were illegally trafficked, and one had its serial number altered. The investigation will take several weeks to fully document the evidence and determine how many firearms were illegally possessed.

"You can legally possess as many firearms as you want," said RCMP Corporal Barry Kirby. "Where it becomes criminal is trafficking, unsafe storage, and unauthorized possession of certain types of weapons."

The investigation began in late March after a 73-year-old Dauphin-area man faced firearms charges in the United States. The RCMP probe uncovered weapons purchased by a second suspect and never lawfully transferred, which led to the search of Mark's property. The allegations have not been tested in court.
