Carney meets UK Prime Minister Burnham during three-day European trip

Prime Minister Mark Carney will meet with United Kingdom Prime Minister Andy Burnham in Liverpool during a three-day European trip beginning Tuesday, marking their first in-person meeting.
The Prime Minister's Office confirmed the meeting agenda will cover Canada-U.K. relations on defence and security, energy, artificial intelligence and critical minerals. Carney had congratulated Burnham after Burnham took office July 20.
Burnham is the fourth UK prime minister in four years, following Liz Truss, Rishi Sunak and Keir Starmer, who was forced out by his own party. Burnham is a former mayor of Greater Manchester.
Carney is also hosting a two-day investment summit in Toronto Monday and Tuesday before heading to Europe. While abroad, Carney is set to address the European Parliament in Strasbourg and attend the State of the European Union address. The European Union's ambassador to Canada has indicated Carney and EU officials are looking to hash out a new partnership.
The trip reflects Carney's broader push for deeper ties with countries in Europe and around the world. It comes as Canada-U.S. relations have worsened. Canadian counter tariffs on billions of dollars of U.S. products went into effect Tuesday after Canada-U.S. trade talks broke down in late August.
