Canada's special envoy to Ukraine, Mark Carney, warned that a U.S.-Russia diesel fuel agreement announced Friday could undermine efforts to end the war in Europe. Carney told Zelenskyy the deal provides Russia with new revenue, according to a statement from the Prime Minister's Office.
The agreement would see Russia supply millions of tonnes of diesel fuel to the United States. On Sunday, Trump posted on social media calling it an "energy ceasefire" between Ukraine and Russia — a characterization that appeared to catch Zelenskyy off guard. Zelenskyy responded on social media saying he supports the idea but is awaiting details from the White House and that Russia must end strikes on Ukrainian energy infrastructure.
Carney also spoke with Trump on Sunday about the energy ceasefire. According to the PMO readout, Carney thanked Trump for efforts to secure it while reiterating both Canada's support for an energy ceasefire and Zelenskyy's call for Russia to uphold any agreement. The PMO also stated that Carney and Zelenskyy discussed increasing coordination with allies on Ukraine's air defence needs.
Neither Trump nor Russia has responded publicly to Carney's criticism of the diesel deal, and Russia has not confirmed terms of the fuel supply agreement or its stance on the proposed ceasefire.
