Finding a garage sale in Edmonton just got a lot easier. YardQuest, a new website built by co-creator Matthew Peace and his team, lets you type in a location and see all the sales within five to 20 kilometres—complete with a map and turn-by-turn directions.
Peace and his co-creator, both veteran garage-sale hunters, built the tool to solve a real problem: the old way—following handwritten signs, missing turns, losing the trail—wastes hours. "We really just wanted a way to make it easier for everyone to locate garage sales and then to have their garage sales found," Peace said.
The site launched with roughly 400 sales posted on its first day. Hosts list what they're selling and their location, but the address stays hidden before and after sale hours—a privacy safeguard Peace emphasized. "We do care a lot about people's security and their own privacy."
Jason Braaksma, who hosts garage sales and hunts for deals at others, sees the upside: no more distracted driving hunting for signs. "If it's on Google Maps and it's in your car, then of course you're not distracted driving. So, if it's telling you where exactly to go, I think that's a proper thing to do."
Peace is already thinking beyond Edmonton. The team plans to expand YardQuest to other Canadian cities.
