Enhance Energy Inc. has broken ground on the Origins project, a carbon capture and storage hub near Clive, about 140 kilometres south of Edmonton and east of Lacombe. The facility is slated to begin operations in January and will be Canada's largest carbon-capture hub.
Origins will initially have capacity to store up to 1.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide per year, connecting to the Alberta Carbon Trunk Line—a pipeline running from the Edmonton region to Clive that was commissioned in 2020. The hub will also link to Enhance Energy's existing Clive facility, which has permanently stored more than nine million tonnes of carbon dioxide since 2020.
The Origins project is expected to create jobs during construction and support operational positions upon completion. Initially, the hub will store carbon emissions from Northwest Redwater Sturgeon Refinery and Nutrien Redwater fertilizer facility, though it could eventually support oil and gas and power generation sectors.
Federal Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Tim Hodgson said in a statement that the project will help Canada become an environmentally responsible energy superpower. Alberta Energy Minister Brian Jean said it would help the province produce "the most responsible oil and gas in the world" and create jobs in rural Alberta.
Enhance Energy is a founding partner of the Alberta Carbon Trunk Line, positioning the Origins project as part of a broader carbon-management ecosystem in the province.
