A staff sergeant with the Ottawa Police Service has been charged with assault following an off-duty incident in Oakville. Walt Lushman was charged by the Halton Regional Police Service after an alleged dispute related to a two-vehicle collision on the night of June 12.

Lushman was released from custody with conditions. The matter remains under investigation by Halton police. An investigation has also been started by the OPS Professional Standards Unit under the Community Safety and Policing Act.

Lushman will have no public-facing duties while the investigation continues. "The OPS holds all officers to a high standard of conduct, both on and off duty, and expects their actions to reflect the trust and values of the community we serve," the service said.
