Sony Interactive Entertainment announced Wednesday that starting January 2028, no new games will receive a physical disc release on PlayStation consoles. All titles launched after that date will be available only through the digital PlayStation Store or as download codes sold in retail.
The decision marks an unprecedented move in gaming: a console manufacturer unilaterally ending physical media support across its entire library. Previous decisions to release or withdraw physical versions have belonged to individual game publishers, not to the three major console makers themselves.
"This is a natural direction to adapt to consumption trends, with the general preference for digital media far outweighing that for physical discs," Sony said in a statement. "This transition will allow us to better respond to current community preferences for how to access and play games."
The shift has long been telegraphed. When PlayStation 5 launched in 2020, Sony offered two models: one with a disc drive and a cheaper version without. Xbox made a similar play with its Series S console, which only plays digital games. More recently, Nintendo charged premium prices for physical Switch 2 games to offset production and distribution costs.
Physical media has already lost functionality — most disc releases now contain only a licence code and require a full download to play. But the end of physical ownership raises preservation questions. If digital storefronts go offline, digital-only games risk disappearing entirely, whereas physical copies remain playable indefinitely. The activist movement "Stop Killing Games," launched in 2024, specifically fights for games that risk becoming unplayable when online services shut down.
In a separate announcement Wednesday, Sony also confirmed it will close the digital storefronts for PlayStation 3 and PS Vita in July 2027 across most regions. Players will still be able to download previously purchased content after the shutdown, the company said, though for how long remains unspecified.
