Prime Minister Mark Carney is in Alberta on Wednesday to announce a new joint program with Premier Danielle Smith aimed at accelerating homebuilding across the province. The two leaders are making the announcement in Red Deer.
Carney's itinerary also includes touring a housing site, visiting a canola farm, and meeting with farmers, signaling the federal government's broader focus on housing as a policy priority.
This visit follows earlier federal commitments to housing. On Tuesday, Ottawa announced it would partner with the Northwest Territories government to build at least 560 affordable housing units—part of the Carney government's effort to address Canada's housing shortage.
Carney has been actively engaged with Alberta's leadership on major initiatives. Earlier this year, HOC covered his meetings with Premier Smith on a West Coast pipeline proposal and his participation in Canada Day celebrations in the province as trade negotiations with other provinces loomed.
