A 24-year-old man was found dead in Lac-Saint-Jean Monday after going missing while swimming at a campsite near Île Belley in Saint-Henri-de-Taillon, bringing the total drowning deaths in the province so far this year to 30.
Sûreté du Québec received a 911 call around 2:45 p.m. reporting a missing swimmer. Multiple lifeguards and firefighters began searching immediately. Around 9:45 p.m., SQ divers recovered the body.
"Everything suggests that this was, in fact, an accidental death," said SQ spokesperson Nancy Fournier. The coroner's investigation is ongoing.
Camping et Plage Belley confirmed the death occurred at their site and expressed condolences to the family.
The death brings Quebec's 2026 drowning count to 30, in line with last year's levels, according to the Lifesaving Society of Quebec.
