Quebec's election campaign entered turbulent territory Friday when Premier Christine Fréchette said she is "very concerned" about possible foreign interference in voting set for October 5.
Fréchette's statement followed reports from Quebecor media outlets that U.S. officials allegedly attempted to negotiate directly with Quebec on customs duties. "Serious information regarding possible risks of foreign interference in the Quebec election has just been disclosed," Fréchette said in a statement from Quebec City. She wrote to Prime Minister Mark Carney seeking an urgent meeting.
"I want the full truth to come to light on this entire issue," Fréchette said. "There is only one principle that will guide us in choosing the next government: only Quebecers should have the opportunity to influence the choice of the next government."
Federal Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand said the government is taking the matter seriously. "Protecting our democracy is of the utmost importance to our country," Anand said at a news conference in Ottawa. She said she will speak with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio after reviewing evidence, adding that she has not yet seen the documentation herself.
