Rachel Renaud, who advocated for the Gabie Renaud Law following her sister's death at the hands of a domestic partner, will run for the Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ) in the fall election, seeking to represent the new riding of Bellefeuille in the Laurentians and Lanaudière.
Gabie Renaud was allegedly killed by her partner in fall 2025. That partner had a long history of domestic violence. Following her death, the National Assembly unanimously passed the Gabie Renaud Law in June — legislation designed to help prevent femicides by giving individuals access to a partner's violence history.
Renaud campaigned for the bill's adoption and was present when it passed. In a press release, she said meeting Premier and CAQ Leader Christine Fréchette immediately impressed her. "This aligns with my desire to make a difference in people's lives; that's what brings me to politics," Renaud stated.
Renaud brings a background in human resources management to her candidacy. Fréchette, speaking on the sidelines of an announcement in Longueuil, said she was proud of the government's record on violence against women. "For us, it has been a priority, a long-standing priority; we have been very, very active and innovative in this fight," she said. "It culminated with the Clare Law, the Gabie Renaud Law last spring… and you should know that we will continue our work."
