Two Swiss fans in full cow regalia brought handmade cowbells to BC Place on Thursday, July 2, as Switzerland defeated Algeria 2-0 and advanced to the Round of 16.

The bovine-clad duo, decked out in cow overalls complete with udders and horned masks, became sideline stars of the evening. Their massive red cowbells—emblazoned with Swiss crosses and handmade in Switzerland—cost approximately 1,000 Swiss Francs, or roughly C$1,750 each. The pair paid 400 Swiss Francs (roughly C$700) for their match tickets.

When asked why cows held such pride of place, one fan explained the national symbolism: "The United States have the eagle. We have the cow. The cow is better than the eagle." The duo drew so much attention that numerous fans asked to photograph them post-game.

Before bringing their ceremonial bells into the stadium, the pair had to contact BC Place and meet its protocol for special items. If you want to follow their World Cup journey, they're documenting their adventures following the Swiss team on Instagram.
