Zown, a Toronto-based company, launched its app this week, allowing eligible Canadian renters to earn cash back of up to 8 per cent of their monthly rent that accumulates toward a future home purchase.

Founcer and CEO Rishard Rameez said the program addresses a barrier many young Canadians face. "For many young Canadians, the first and biggest transaction on a monthly basis is rent," he said. "We don't want people to give up on home ownership because this has been the vehicle to build wealth for the longest period of time. We want it just to be able for the younger Canadians to also get to that point."

Renters sign up by submitting a lease agreement and providing proof of monthly rent payment. They can continue paying their landlord through their preferred method—e-transfer, cheque, or cash—or pay rent directly through Zown once that option becomes available. Rewards are sent directly to a lawyer's trust account on closing day, not as spendable cash.

On a $2,000 monthly rent, renters earn $160 in monthly rewards, or $1,920 annually. Over five years at that rent level (assuming no increases), accumulated rewards total $9,600. For a $500,000 home purchase requiring a 5 per cent down payment ($25,000 plus closing costs), $10,000 in accumulated Zown rewards covers a significant portion.

Zown launched its platform in 2022 and has distributed roughly $7 million to Canadian buyers since then. The company's database includes more than 65,000 people currently renting and wanting to purchase a home, with the majority based in B.C., Quebec, and Ontario. Zown is registered as a real estate platform in California and Texas, where early interest has emerged. The company's longer-term goal is to help 10,000 young renters afford a home purchase by 2028.

The source does not specify Zown's cash-back program eligibility criteria, any restrictions on renter participation, or how many renters have enrolled since launch this week.
