Heavy rain across Alberta this weekend has triggered flood watches and warnings for numerous rivers and streams, with some areas receiving up to 100 millimetres of rain.
Canmore and Kananaskis Improvement District have both declared States of Local Emergency. Canmore has issued flood watches for every steep creek in the area, including Cougar Creek, Stoneworks Creeks, XYZ, and Three Sisters. The town warned that flowing water and debris pose serious threats to human safety and infrastructure, and residents are being advised to stay away from all creeks.
Kananaskis is coordinating response efforts through its activated Emergency Coordination Centre, supporting campground evacuations as needed and monitoring infrastructure. William Watson Lodge is available as temporary shelter for those requiring a safe place to stay.
A flood warning is in effect for the Elbow River, while flood watches are in effect for the Red Deer River near Sundre and the Little Red Deer River Basin. You can monitor water levels and flow rates across the province on the Alberta River Basins website, which provides real-time data measured in metres and cubic metres per second. Some locations have cameras that periodically post photos of stream conditions.
