Trump bans Canadian dairy, alcohol and motorcycles from U.S., escalating trade war beyond tariffs

The United States has moved beyond tariffs in its trade war with Canada, announcing outright bans on Canadian dairy products, motorcycles, wines and spirits effective September 29.
Canada retaliated Tuesday morning with steep tariffs on roughly $20 billion worth of American goods — about 6 percent of the $333.6 billion the U.S. exported to Canada last year. Those tariffs took effect at 12:01 a.m., hitting steel, aluminum, cheese, appliances, clothing, cosmetics and farm equipment at rates of 15, 25 or 50 percent.
The escalation follows the collapse of trade talks on August 21. Prime Minister Mark Carney said U.S. demands could hollow out key Canadian industries and limit Canada's independence. "Carney and Canada have become symbolic of resistance to him," said Robert Bothwell, a Canadian historian. "And what he'll want to do is make an example of Carney and Canada and theoretically terrify everybody else."
The trade war has already shifted consumer behaviour in Canada. Eight of the country's ten provinces restrict or ban U.S. alcohol sales. The Distilled Spirits Council reported U.S. spirits exports to Canada fell more than 70 percent year over year after provincial restrictions took effect.
Trump has widened his pressure beyond trade mechanics. He directed the U.S. General Services Administration to declare Canadian products ineligible for large, long-term federal contracts until Canada allows "full and fair reciprocity" for American products. Trump also renamed Lake Ontario "Lake America," and Google and Apple changed their maps for U.S. users after his pressure. "After renaming a gulf and a lake, maybe the next step for him is to rename a river?" said Daniel Béland, a political scientist at McGill University.
