WestJet allows flight changes and cancellations for passengers amid strike threat

WestJet is giving passengers with flights scheduled from July 30 to August 4 a one-time opportunity to change or cancel their bookings at no charge, citing "greater flexibility and confidence" during ongoing labour negotiations with flight attendants.
The move comes after CUPE Local 8125 flight attendants voted 99.4 per cent in favour of strike authorization earlier this month. About 4,400 union members could legally walk off the job beginning August 2.
CUPE 8125 president Alia Hussain called WestJet's decision encouraging, noting it "introduces a lot of uncertainty for passengers." She said the airline's move does not necessarily confirm a strike will happen, but reflects responsible business practice. "Both sides are committed to reaching a deal," Hussain said, adding that WestJet remains "actively engaged in negotiations."
WestJet last faced a major labour disruption in summer 2024, when unionized mechanics struck over the Canada Day long weekend, affecting tens of thousands of travellers.
