Thursday's a scorcher—watch the commute, catch the Cup prep
It's warm out, roads are rough in spots, and the World Cup is ramping up. Here's what you need.
Morning. It's 22 degrees but feels more like 29 with the humidity—bring sunscreen if you're heading outside, because the UV's sitting at 9 (high), and you'll feel it fast. We've got good light tonight until 8:59 PM, so if you're planning anything outdoor later, you've got time.
Commute's a bit rough in a few spots. The Gardiner's down westbound beyond Spadina, so if you're heading that way off the Lakeshore, budget extra time. There's a disabled vehicle blocking the left lane on the 401 westbound express at Bathurst, and up north the Allen Road northbound ramp at the 401 is completely flooded—all lanes closed. The 905 has its own thing going: disabled vehicle on the QEW Toronto-bound on-ramp at Dixie Road in Sauga, right lane blocked. Nothing insurmountable, but check your route before you leave.
World Cup is heating up T.O.'s conversation this week. The city's using the tournament to shine a light on health-care infrastructure, and if you're thinking about catching matches or the vibe, today the FIFA Fan Festival is running at Fort York and the Bentway starting at 12:30 PM—free entry, good crowd energy, and it's the kind of thing to dip into at lunch if you're downtown. Tomorrow's the real draw: Canada takes on Bosnia at BMO Field. If that's your thing, tickets are moving, so grab them now.
Along the same lines, bars and restaurants around the stadium are navigating some World Cup trademark stuff—nothing that kills the party, just heads-up if you're planning your watch spot. A few spots near the ground are already on people's radar for match days.
On the food front, there's buzz about a French chef, Didier Leroy, opening an intimate spot in the Junction. That's one to keep on the radar if you're looking for something new in that neighbourhood. Some bars are also setting minimums for World Cup games, so check ahead if you're planning to camp out for a match.
Tonight's got theatre, live music, and a Japanese film premiere if you're looking for something to do—Dog Man the Musical at the CAA, Feng at the Opera House at 7, Chris Ramsay at the Royal if comedy's your move. Plenty of indoor options for when it cools down.
Stay cool out there. Catch you later.
