Canada Day heat and the Jays at three — make it count
It's hot, it's a statutory holiday, and the city's got plans. Here's what you need sorted.
Happy Canada Day. It's 25 degrees right now, but humidex has it feeling like 34—and we've got a heat warning out for 44-degree feel-like temps today. That's the real deal: you'll want to stay hydrated, take breaks in the shade or AC if you're out for the long haul, and keep an eye on the people around you. Sun's brutal too—UV is sitting at 9, which is high. Sunset's not until 9:03 tonight, so you've got a long stretch of daylight, but use it smart.
If you're heading anywhere by car, there's a couple of things to know. The 401 Westbound's got collision reports at both the 427 South entrance and the ramp itself—right now it's down to one lane and both shoulders closed on the ramp, so avoid that corridor if you can. Lawrence at the Don Valley and Finch at Highway 27 are also backed up. The TTC should be your move if you're staying downtown.
On the local front: Queen's Park North's getting a redesign, but it's scaled back after people in the neighbourhood pushed back on the original plan. Worth knowing if you walk through there. Also, there was a hate-motivated assault near Jane and Lawrence that's led to a charge, and a human trafficking investigation in York Region. Both serious—stay aware of your surroundings.
Tonight's got some real options if you want to get out. The Jays are home at Rogers Centre at 3:07 PM against the Mets—that's your Canada Day sports moment right there. If theatre's your thing, Cirque du Soleil's Luzia is under the Big Top, and there's indie live music scattered around the city: bixby at The Mod Club at 7, Widowspeak at The Sound Garage, and Loud Luxury out at the RBC Amphitheatre. If you want daytime, Casa Loma's open from 9:30, and there's Medusa at the Young Centre at 1:30 PM.
Food-wise: Kela Greek's brought that viral frozen yogurt trend to T.O. if you want something cold and a little indulgent. Farm Boy's got a summer menu curator if you're planning something at home, and there's a secret seafood bar called the Gemini hidden above Dundas West if you want to treat yourself. Subway's also launched SubDog—a hot dog sandwich situation—if you're in a pinch.
The heat's real today, so pace yourself. Get out if you can, stay cool where you need to, and enjoy the fact that the whole city's got the day off. See you out there.
