Heat warning, World Cup fever, and a zoo back in action
It's a hot one today—stay hydrated, watch the roads, and catch the soccer at BMO tonight.
Morning. It's 25 degrees right now but it'll feel like 34 with the humidity, and Environment Canada's got a heat warning up—so that two-four stays in the cooler, sunscreen goes on early, and you're picking shaded spots or air conditioning for chunks of the day. We've got 15 and a half hours of daylight today, sunset at 9:03, which means tonight's going to stay warm even after the sun dips.
Commute's got some friction. The Don Valley Parkway southbound is shut down past Bayview and Bloor, so if that's your route, reroute early. There's a collision on the 401 westbound at Renforth taking out a lane and the shoulder—nothing catastrophic but factor it in. The 409 eastbound at Attwell is in the same boat. And the 506 Carlton's out of service between Main Station and Coxwell because of a security incident, so streetcar riders on that stretch need to find another way.
Couple of things worth clocking: the Toronto Zoo's back open today after a power outage shut them down on Canada Day. If you've got plans there, you're good to go. On the broader city front, Ontario pushed through its strong mayor powers yesterday despite most people saying no thanks—one of those decisions that happens whether the room's with you or not.
If you're hungry, there's some real food news. Two Thai chefs, Roj and Jojo, just opened Lhao Thai-Chinese, bringing family recipes from Bangkok Chinatown into T.O. If you're hunting something else, Kela Greek is now here with that viral frozen yogurt thing everyone's been talking about, and Farm Boy's got a summer menu curator picking the hard decisions for you.
Tonight's the one. World Cup Round of 32—Group K's second-place finisher against Group L's second-place team at BMO Field, 7 o'clock kickoff. If you're into it, that's the energy downtown. There's a pre-game celebration at Croatia House starting at 1 p.m., and the FIFA Fan Festival is running at Fort York and The Bentway from 1:30 on, so you can soak up the buzz before the match. If soccer's not your lane, Lamb's playing The Drake at 7, Nemophila's at Lee's Palace, and Gotts Street Park's got The Mod Club. Just remember it'll still be hot outside even this late, so pick indoor if you can.
Stay cool out there. Drink water, take the heat seriously, and if you're heading anywhere tonight, give yourself extra time—the roads are moving slower than usual.
