Sunday heat, live music everywhere, and the 401's usual mess
Warm one coming in — pack sunscreen if you're heading out, and skip the highway if you can.
It's a proper summer Sunday in T.O. — 21 degrees but feels like 28 with that humidity sitting on us, and the UV's cranked up at 9, so you'll want sunscreen if you're spending the day outside. You've got a solid 15 hours and 20 minutes of daylight, with sunset at 9:02 p.m., which means if you're planning an evening out, the light'll hold longer than you'd expect.
If you're driving anywhere near the 401, just know it's the usual Sunday mess out there. There's a disabled vehicle on the eastbound express at Allen Road with the right lane shut down, and westbound's got a few separate incidents — another disabled vehicle at Islington, a collision at Renforth taking out a left lane, and one more disabled vehicle at Keele Street. Nothing catastrophic, but expect some crawl. If you can take a back route or wait it out, probably worth it.
On the local front, a few things worth knowing: there's a solid crew of Ronaldo fans who got a little too keen this week — they climbed a 25-foot fence at Centennial Park to catch Portugal's final practice session. Meanwhile, good news for King West — Sneaky Dee's just got saved from a 16-storey redevelopment after RBC stepped in and said no thanks. The bar's staying put. And if you're into baseball, Guerrero Jr. pulled himself from the all-star selection to rest his back.
For eating, Summerlicious is live right now with 230 restaurants across the city running three-course menus at discounted prices — solid way to try somewhere new without the full hit. If you're into pizza, one of our own, Ryan Baddeley, just cracked the world's top 100, so that's worth celebrating. And there's a new Japanese steakhouse opening downtown this week if you're in the mood for something slick and upscale.
Tonight's got options depending on your mood. There's Cirque du Soleil: Luzia under the big top if you want something theatrical and a bit transportive. If you're chasing live music, Cherry Beach is hosting PENELOPE and some electronic acts at 4 p.m., and over at Sunnyside Pavilion at 6 p.m., Sunnyside Sessions is bringing in Anjunadeep for an electronic dance vibe that'll run into the late light. There's also a Toronto Tempo game at Coca-Cola Coliseum at 3 p.m. if you want to catch some basketball.
Stay cool out there, get some shade if you're outside for hours, and have a good one.
