Monday cool-down: heat wave breaks, commute's got a couple snags

Heat wave's officially done. We're at 19 right now and topping out around 26 through Friday, so if you've been melting in the humidity, today's your relief. Mixed sun and clouds all week — still plenty of daylight (sun's not down till 9:02 PM), but UV's sitting at 8.0, which is high, so don't skip the sunscreen if you're outside for the day. That said, the weather window's solid for whatever you've got planned.

Commute-wise, keep an eye on the Gardiner — both directions are showing slowdowns this morning. Eastbound's backed up beyond Jameson, and westbound's rough past Park Lawn. There's also a disabled vehicle blocking one right lane on the 401 Express at Leslie, so if that's your route, give yourself a few extra minutes. Ormsby Cres between Forest Hill and Spadina is also restricted, if that's in your world.

On the neighbourhood front: a Toronto family just took a massive W after holding onto a Diogo Jota jersey — they've scored World Cup tickets, travel, and ten grand out of the deal. Random, but the kind of ting that still happens in this city. Meanwhile, a local family's suing the city for $2.8 million over housing project fees related to services for disabled children — that one's worth paying attention to if you follow city development and policy.

If you're thinking lunch or dinner, Summerlicious is live right now with 230 restaurants across T.O. offering three-course menus at a discount, so it's a solid week to try somewhere new or revisit a spot you've been meaning to get back to. And if you're into pizza — one of our own, Ryan Baddeley, just ranked 59th in the world's best pizza chefs. Two Canadian pizzaiolos cracking the world top 100 is no small thing. Low-ABV canned cocktails are also having a moment around the city for park hangs, if you're looking for a lighter option to bring out tonight.

Evening's got some solid options: live music at Hard Luck (LELO at 7) or the Concert Hall (GOAT at 7) if you want to catch something, or Casa Loma's doing a night at the opera in the gardens at 7:30. Weather's still decent for outdoor stuff, so that Casa Loma show could be sick if that's your vibe. Daytime's lighter — Casa Loma general admission opens at 9:30 if you want to do the tour, or Black Coffee at the Port Lands at 3 if you just want to settle in somewhere.

It's a solid start to the week. Stay hydrated, check those road conditions before you head out, and enjoy the break from the heavy heat.
