Monday Morning: Commute's Got Bumps, but Tonight's Yours to Own
Few transit hiccups on the 401, but Cirque and the National Bank Open are calling—pick your vibe and go.
Morning, T.O. It's 17 degrees and mostly cloudy out there, so grab a layer if you're heading out early. UV's running high at 7.0, so don't sleep on the sunscreen if you're out for lunch. You've got a solid 14.5 hours of daylight, with sunset landing at 8:38 PM—plenty of time for whatever you land on tonight.
On the commute side, a couple things to know: there's a collision tied up the 427 southbound ramp at the 401, right lane's blocked. Over on the 401 eastbound express at McCowan, left shoulder and one left lane are down too. The usual—nothing catastrophic, but budget a few extra minutes if you're heading that way. The Birchmount situation from Foxridge down to St. Clair is still live, and the 995 York Mills express got itself sorted near York Mills Station, so that's back to normal. Nothing that should wreck your Monday, just the standard August slow-burn.
Worth knowing: the new subway extension is now 75 percent done, and they've built an 11-metre tunnel that's actually unique in Canada. The Jays picked up Jameson Taillon from the Cubs, which is solid depth if you're tracking the roster moves. On the tougher end, a man in his twenties died after being hit by a pickup truck in Downsview Park's parking lot over the weekend—one of those reminders to stay sharp when you're moving through those spaces.
For eats, The Night Baker just closed its original College Street spot after seven years, so if you had a regular order there, you'll want to find your new home. Roots is running a food pop-up at The Well through the end of July featuring six iconic Canadian destinations, if you're curious what that looks like. Grape Witches is doing a tomato party right now with Robinson Bread's four-foot heirloom sandwich—worth a scoop if you're downtown and feeling it. Fair warning though: there's a Hershey Kisses recall out there over undeclared almonds, so check your stash if that's a thing you keep around.
Tonite's got some solid options. The National Bank Open women's tennis is running at Sobeys Stadium—first round starts at 12:30 if you want to catch it during the day, and it runs again at 7:00 PM. Cirque du Soleil's Luzia is up under the big top at multiple times (1:00 PM and 5:00 PM), which is usually a banger. If you want something a little different, Casa Loma's running Symphony in the Gardens (Broadway to Opera) at 7:30 PM—perfect for a backyard vibe before it gets dark. Light rain's supposed to sit in there, so lean indoor if you're deciding.
Monday's a slow roll, but tonight's yours. Make it count.
Stay sharp out there.
