Friday Heat and Festival Energy — Here's Your Day
Warm one coming, highways are messy, but tonight the city's alive. Get sorted before you head out.
It's going to feel warmer than 21 actually says — humidity's pushing it up to 27 — so dress light and keep water close. UV's sitting at 6, which is high, so sunscreen's not optional if you're outside for a stretch. You've got almost fourteen and a half hours of daylight, and the sun doesn't drop until 8:33 PM, so plan your evening around that.
For getting around: the 401 is a bit of a mess this morning. There's a collision on the eastbound collector ramp at Islington with the left lane down, and a disabled vehicle on the westbound on-ramp at Warden that's shut all lanes. The 427 southbound on-ramp at Finch is also fully closed for highway maintenance. The 400 southbound has one right lane blocked at Sheppard. If you're heading out of the city, give yourself time or find another route—nothing's moving fast out there right now.
A few things worth knowing: SickKids has charged another employee in a child luring investigation—second one in a month, which is rough and worth being aware of. There's also a long strike underway in Ontario disability care that's pushing families into real crisis. On the housing side, the GTA market's tightened up in July with sales dropping and listings shrinking, so if you're thinking about listing or buying, it's worth paying attention to that shift. And heads up—TTC subway station supervisors just voted to strike as contract talks have stalled.
If you're thinking food, slushies and frozen cocktails are having their moment in T.O. right now, and honestly, today's the day for it. King West's got Hotel À Toi swapping its coffee-and-oysters thing for a moody lobby bar this month if you want to check that out. There's also Vers, a new queer-owned café and community hub over in Carleton Village, worth a visit. Fair warning though—Costco's recalling Alfa Croissants over potential mould, so check your freezer if you picked some up recently.
Tonight is absolutely buzzing. The National Bank Open women's tennis third round is on at Sobeys Stadium from 7 PM if that's your thing. You've also got live music scattered across the city—Zoh Amba at The Sound Garage at 7 is worth a look if you're into electronic. And if you want to go full festival mode, Electric Island is running as a two-day rave in the Portlands (19+ only), so if that's calling you, head down. Casa Loma's also open all day if you want something slower and daylit before things heat up tonight.
Get outside, stay hydrated, and have a good one out there.
