Monday Heat: Commute Watch and a Full Night Ahead
It's warm out there. Keep an eye on the 401, and stick around for baseball tonight.
Morning. It's 21 degrees but feels like 27 with the sun pushing down — that UV's sitting at 8, which is high, so you'll want your sunscreen if you're out for the day. Mostly cloudy overhead, which'll help a bit. Sunset's not until 8:29, so you've got a long one ahead. That warmth is a step up from what we've had, so dress light.
Commute-wise, keep your eyes open on the 401 eastbound near Allen Road — there's a disabled vehicle that's got the left shoulder and left lane tied up. The backup'll depend on when you're heading out, but budget a few extra minutes if you're heading that way. On the ground, Eastern Ave's got some diversions northeast of Cherry, and Adelaide East's blocked off for a stretch between Parliament and Bayview. Nothing apocalyptic, but worth knowing.
Couple things worth your radar: The Raps played a tight one against Ottawa in the National Super League and came away with a draw after a late equalizer. Leylah Fernandez is out of the National Bank Open — the Canadian singles run's finished — but Rybakina's still moving at the Open, straight-set win to the quarterfinals. On the darker side, there was an armed robbery and carjacking attempt near Bathurst and Richmond over the weekend; two are in custody. And out in Scarborough, the Cornell Campbell House storage barn took heavy fire damage.
If you're hungry, Curryish Tavern's running a spicy curry challenge — finish it and you walk with a hundred bucks and a free meal. If the heat's just melting you where you stand, Toronto's answer is slushies and frozen cocktails everywhere right now. King West's got Hotel À Toi swapping its coffee-and-oysters thing for a moody lobby bar this month if you want to check it out. Fair warning: Costco's recalling Alfa Croissants over mould, so check your freezer.
Tonight, the Jays host the Boston Red Sox at Rogers Centre at 7:07 — get out there if you want live baseball on a Monday. If that's not your speed, there's a metal show at History (Dimmu Borgir with Hypocrisy and Hulder, 19+, doors at 7), or the National Bank Open women's tennis quarterfinals are on at Sobeys Stadium at 7. Casa Loma's open all day if you want something quieter and indoor before the sun's gone.
Keep cool out there. Talk soon.
